The heart of every region is its grass-type Pokémon!
My Fanart Series
This series combines two things I love: Pokémon and plants! For each of these print designs, I always begin with a ton of research into the grass-types of that region along with real-world locations, inspirations, and gimmicks and lore that could potentially effect the style. It’s the hidden details that make these so fun to design!
When I know what plant species I want to include, I get to making a rough sketch of the design. I typically start with the base of the bouquet - the vase - the vessel that contains all of these botanicals. This is where I can inject a lot of the character, style, and traditions of the region into the piece - be it a traditional Japanese urn or a Hawaiian tiki planter.
Call me old-fashioned, but I like to hand-draw my designs in pencil. Bringing together up to 20 different botanical species (not to mention the possibility of trees, vegetables, fruit, fungi, ultra-beasts, and futuristic iron leaves) into one piece can be chaotic. Traditional drawing practice helps me to navigate the harmony of the design.
When I’m happy with the sketch, I clean up the piece by inking it with smooth line art. From there I can add all of the shading hatching details that bring about the vintage botanical look these prints are known for.
Finally, I’ll scan the final image and color these designs digitally - often getting lost in the process and discovering even more details than originally planned.
